    • Correct Method to Upgrade From Cookie 4 to Cookie 5

Subject says most of it  🙂

I have looked around the site but have come up empty. Does it matter?

I ask because I had a nagging, repeated issue where version 5 constantly deleted cookies I require for my bank which forced me to re-authenticate myself and my computer to my bank over and over. I have downloaded the latest beta for version 5 but have yet to run it.

Fwiw, version 4 still seems to run like the champ it has always been so perhaps that is an argument to not even bother with version 5.

    • RE: How to uninstall Cookie 5

Thanks for this Russell. I did a search with Find Any File and noted quite a few other bits and pieces that referenced Cookie 5 so why would they not be a significant part of an uninstall?

The reason I was looking to uninstall is that ever since I started running Cookie 5 some cookies I mark as favourites randomly lose track. One particular set of cookies have to do with my banking login that saves my bank card number and the security connection between my bank login and my computer. I never had this issue when using any previous version of Cookie.

I was most curious to reinstall version 4.5.4 and see if the same behaviour occurs. At least then it would be a safe assumption that my bank has changed something that is interfering with the saving of the bank's cookies. If version 4.5.4 continues to act as reliably as it did previously then it would seem Cookie 5 is acting in a different manner where it fails to reliably maintain the cookies I favourited for my bank.

    • RE: Cookie 5 Repeated Crash on Launch

I restarted just now and was surprised that Cookie asked again for Gatekeeper approval. Do you have any idea why that would not have been remembered between the first install/opening of Cookie 5.0.3.8 yesterday and the restart now?

Btw, as you informed me, the version numbers were corrected after the restart.

Ok. I will watch for the correction. Thanks again for sticking with this and getting me going again.

    • Cookie 5 Pricing

I am curious how long the $7.99 (11 bucks for us Canucks) listed price for Cookie 5 will be offered for. I am moving up from vers 4.5.4 but notice that I do not have to in order to have El Capitan support. You have repeatedly proven yourself as a Developer who provides fantastic support along with fantastic and reliable software but I would still prefer to test drive version 5 for a bit before committing to the purchase.

      Thanks,

      Gord

    • RE: Cookie 5 Repeated Crash on Launch

Thanks for sticking with this. Interesting result though. Prior to unzipping the last beta you provided I did a few things:

      Started up in Safe Mode
Deleted absolutely everything I could find that related to either Cookie 4 or Cookie 5

That included the folders for vers. 4 and 5 here:

      ~/Library/Containers

      and here:

      ~/Library/Cookies

along with any and all associated plists, caches and the Cookie Application Support folder.

I was pleased that Cookie launched once I rebooted after the Safe Boot, although I confess I was rather surprised at how many approvals were required. Does that have to do with SIP?

Now I notice that I get two different version numbers for the Cookie 5 install. If I check through "About Cookie" from the Menu Bar it displays version 5.0.3.8.

However, If I "Get Info" on the Cookie app that resides in my Applications Folder I get version 5.0.3.7.

I attached a couple of screenshots showing those results.

Sorry, no such luck for me. Perhaps there is something specific to my setup that is interfering at the moment. I am attaching the latest crash report but plan to do a Safe Boot and then try again.

Thanks for the effort but this version acted the same and immediately crashed. I have attached the crash report.

    • Cookie 5 Repeated Crash on Launch

So far, I am sad to say, Cookie 5 has been a total disaster. I cannot even open it in El Capitan. There were no specific install instructions/suggestions included with the dmg but I unchecked the ability of vers. 4.5.4 to launch on startup and then I deleted vers 4.5.4 along with its prefs and cache before even trying to run vers. 5.0.3. As soon as I try to launch it it crashes each and every time.

I attached a TextEdit copy of the last crash.

    • RE: Two Instances of Cookie in Menu Bar

For me, for as far back in versions as I can recall, Cookie's window always opened at Login even though it was checked to "Hide."

For the time being it is not checked to "Hide."

Also, when I initially posted my question I went through the steps to upload an attachment which was a pic of what I was seeing. Is that something you see or did it disappear into the ether?

    • RE: Two Instances of Cookie in Menu Bar

Apologies for the delay in adding to this. I had a terrible time removing the Carbon Copy Cloner Safety Net folder and have learned that was a result of Apple's recent "System Integrity Protection", or SIP. However, after deleting the folder and restarting I had only a single instance of Cookie in the Menu Bar but the next restart brought back two versions of Cookie.

I had no drives either mounted or even turned on. What I did notice is that Cookie showed as a Login Item:

      ~/Login Items

      so what I did was:

I unchecked “Open Cookie at Login”
however, this still left the Cookie.app login listed in ~/Login Items

“hide” was initially checked but I have unchecked it.

      Removed the ~/Login Item/Cookie.app

relaunched Cookie and re-selected “Open Cookie at Login”

This does not recreate the Login Item in ~/Login Items

After a restart the Cookie Login item no longer appears in ~/Login Items

I also have had no repeat instance (so far at least) of double Cookie apps in the Menu Bar.

Obviously Cookie is using a different method to launch itself at Login other than including it in ~/Login Items so perhaps my Login entry was from an earlier version of Cookie and never got cleared when Cookie was updated?

For the moment this seems to be resolved. I have restarted a number of times this morning and no double instances of Cookie have appeared in the Menu Bar.

Still, the question remains for me as to why this would seem to randomly begin occurring in the first place.

    • RE: Two Instances of Cookie in Menu Bar

Thanks for the insta-reply Russell. No backup disk currently on although it did make me consider that I have a Carbon Copy Cloner Safety Net. However, checking it does not show any version of Cookie.

This is very recent behaviour. It also occurs every single time I have had to restart this machine.

      Colour me confused.

I am in the middle of something that is preventing a restart right this minute. As soon as I am able I will remove the Carbon Copy Cloner Safety Net, restart the machine and report back the results.

While there is no Cookie application in the CCC Safety Net I do notice there are other Cookie-associated items included in the Safety Net so perhaps it is the source of a conflict.

    • Two Instances of Cookie in Menu Bar

      Cookie version 4.5.2
      OS El Capitan 10.11.1

This is a very recent occurrence that I can't tie to any particular OS upgrade or other software installation - seemed random.

Upon a restart I have two instances of Cookie showing up in the Menu Bar. They look identical, they act identical and it does not matter which one I quit, Cookie seems to continue working correctly.

Not all sure what steps to take to eliminate this issue.
