Some Chrome prefs are being reset by Cookie (I think)

  • I've just noticed that the Chrome Preference for: "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly" seems to be reset to ON when Cookie 5.5.7 (MAS) is run.

I realize that this seems unlikely, since we are talking about a Preference setting, but in my basic testing with Chrome 59.0.3071.86 on ElCapitan and Sierra this seems to be the case...

My Cookie settings are to Remove non-favorites On Browser quit.

    Any ideas?

  • It could well be doing this. I'll look into it.

  • It does seem that Cookie is affecting this one particular preference setting.
Just updated to to Chrome 59.0.3071.104 (Stable) and is still happening.

I not particularly good at figuring out which cookies are linked to particular behaviors, but I think that in this case, the Chrome preference setting for "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly" lives in a LocalStorage item named 'levelbd.' Favoriting this item in Cookie5 seems to allow our pref setting to persist when Cookie5 runs.

  • thats great detective work

  • Well, not so fast.
It turns out I was wrong.
For sone reason Cookie5's removal options -> automatic removal options (On Browser Quit) had mysteriously become turned off for the Chrome profile I was using to test, so what seemed like success in thiking that the 'leveldb' Local Storage item held the pref for "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly" turned o noticed reenabled the removal option.

So, Cookie5 is causing Chrome to reset this pref.I have opened Chrome, deselected "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly" and then favorited every website item in Cookie5.  Then when Cookie5 runs (On Browser Quit) that pref becomes reset.

So, Chrome emus be storing the value for this pref somewhere where Cookie5 is clearing it..

  • This is still an issue...

  • Any progress on making sure the Cookie does not re-enable Chrome's "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly" pref???

  • @Timmy said in Some Chrome prefs are being reset by Cookie (I think):

Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly

it looks as though the setting is saved in the cache
    😞

  • @SweetP Thanks for figuring this out.
I guess that basically means that there is no way for Cookie to avoid clearing this setting. Very weird of Google to do this IMHO.

  • yeah is an odd place to save settings?
maybe ill take another look in the morning just to make sure. It doesn't seem right...
