3.0.x - can't register with existing key

2.x popped up offering me to update to 3.0.1.

I updated and the update process seemingly completed OK but the app was not running and I could not launch it from /Applications

Downloaded fresh copy of 3.0.1 and it shows 14 day trial. It will not take my registration key.

Has the key format changed for 3.x ?
