Strange behavior today in v5.5.8

Starting this afternoon (earlier in the day it was OK), three things are happening:

1. The icon now shows as white on black instead of the other way around,

2. I no longer have access to the dropdown menu from the icon - all entries are there, but greyed out. Display varies between normal, and once suddenly showed 863 cookies, which was spurious and way wrong.

Help?!

thats sounds like Cookie became disable somehow.
all you need to do open the menubar and click
"Enable Automatic Removal"

That wasn't it, but I redid preferences, and it returned to normal. Thanks anyway.
