Cookie options greyed out
-
Hi Russell,
I'm using cookie on 10.75 and have been a user for a while now.
Periodically I find the menubar items are all greyed out. So, for example, if I want to select 'Remove All Non-Favorite Safari Cookies (49) I cannot. The same goes for all the other items. About all I can do is quit Cookie. Quitting and re-starting (and re-booting) don't make any difference - it's all still greyed out.
My only fix has been to delete it and all the associated items (using app delete) then re-install.
Any ideas why this might be happening?
Thanks, Richard

Hi Richard,
this is what I think is happening.
You either;
1 - purchased Cookie on the Mac App Store, and then updated it via d/l from my website. The MAS version, and the version from my site aren't interchangeable, so your current version will be running in free trial mode for 2 weeks and then the trial is expiring.OR 2 - originally purchased through my site, and your license details have been deleted/corrupted somehow.
the fix is easy.
1 - delete Cookie, and re-download from the MAS.
2 - re-enter your license details, if you've lost it, send me an email with your purchase email, and ill email a new one to you.let me know if this is not the case, and we'll figure out what is happening.

Hi, I just emailed you saying you had it right. Then, I found the same thing had recurred. That is the version I am now using, from the App store, is all greyed out again.
I'm trying to delete all the associated items but not the main Cookie app and see if that works after a restart. It feels a bit odd though.

Russell hi,
I’m using Cookie version 3.0.11 downloaded from the App store. It is running on a new iMac under 10.8.2
I am still occasionally experiencing the ‘greyed out’ problem on the menus. It happened a few minutes ago just after i had selected ‘Remove Safari Cache’ from the menubar drop down. I had just prior to that gone through a similar process and removed the non-favorite cookies.
It has happened I think twice more in the last ten days. I cannot find any reports in ‘Console’.
My only ‘fix’ is to restart my iMac.
Any ideas, clearly something is not working correctly.
Thanks, Richard

Hi, that’s odd. It doesn’t seem to fit with what I find. For example just now, after clearing successively the non favourites, the flash cookies, the Safari cache and the history it has greyed out but I am left with 123 tracking cookies. Are you absolutely sure there are just the two reasons you mention for the greying out. If so, why would I still have the tracking cookies left when it has greyed out?
One more thing, once it has greyed out, it doesn’t reflect any new cookies that I know are being loaded because I’m now on a site that loads dozens of cookies and not one of them has showed up in the Cookie menubar drop down - it’s as if Cookie has gone to deep sleep.
Any further thoughts would be welcome.
Regards, Richard

This is really odd?
I apologize again for the delay (im just not getting the notification's)do you see any kind of pattern as to when it occurs?
after removing cache for instance. If you can find some kind of pattern to this, i'll try to recreate the bug.

Russel hi again,
The only thing that seems to be common to most of the episodes is that they have occurred when emptying the Safari cache (via the cookie drop down) has been the last item.
Mostly I use the menu options to clear items (rather than setting a default clearance in the preferences) because I find some, though definitely not all, of the tracking cookies useful. For example the BBC in the uk keeps my local and thus shwos me the appropriate local weather and news, via one of it’s cookies.
Anyhow, if you do find out what is happening, I shall be delighted.
