Worked fine with Safari on OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan. Then update 4.5.2 comes along and I blindly install the update (never again). Now the app does not launch when I start Safari and I can't even get it to start using the Cookie App icon. No Idea what has happened or how to even get the App open to see if there is a setting that needs changing.

I'm pretty new to Mac's so not even sure if I can uninstall and reinstall the program (like on a PC) to fix the problem.

Anyone have any ideas that might help?

It sounds like your cookie file has become corrupted. But its an easy fix.
All you need to do is delete the file:
        ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies

you can also reset the Cookie daemon by copy&pasting this command:
        killall -KILL nsurlstoraged

        into Terminal:
        Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app

Also, I have just uploaded v4.5.3 to my site which is more stable when encountering errors in the cookie file:
        http://sweetpproductions.com/products/cookie/Cookie.dmg

If you're using the Mac App Store version,
it will be released sometime this coming week after review by Apple.
        🙂

Russel, I don't know if you have been reading my separate posts about system crashes but if you so you'll recall that I have problems with 4.5.2 whereby on ShutDown the machine restarts with an error saying "your computer restarted because of a problem". I just downloaded 4.5.3 and the same problem remains, i.e. with Cookie not running the machine shuts down normally but if Cookie is running then shut down fails. I hope you eventually fix this but in the meantime I do not use Cookie.

I was having the same problem this morning. I deleted the cookie file, but it happened again. I downloaded v4.5.3 (was running MAS v4.5.2 before) and it happened again. The app crashes, then won’t start up again until I delete the cookie file.

Thanks Russell. This worked to get started and working again. After my initial post, I was somehow (after several hard shutdowns) managed to get the App to work again without the steps you noted.

But I've found that overnight (after Mac has gone to sleep), the App is no longer working when I bring the Mac back up in the morning. So my guess is it crashed at some point. I was able to get the App working again by following your instructions. So at least I can get it working easily now until the new update comes through the App Store.

              Thanks for replying!!!

@LA2NV what you can do till 4.5.3 comes out is disable Tracking Cookie removal, that is what is causing the cookie corruption. There is an error in 4.5.2 in my Tracking Cookie removal.

I’ve had half a dozen crashes of 3.5.3 so far today. I could disable the tracking cookie removal, but if it doesn’t remove tracking cookies, there’s not a lot of point in running Cookie.

Hope you can track the problem down. I can send crash reports if it would help.

Thanks. It’s still crashing, and I’ve sent the report.

Thanks Russell that seemed to work but for only a time, but now seems to crash periodically but not as often. I appreciate your working so hard to try and get this all resolved.

But now I seem to notice that even when it is running and I've deselected the tacking cookie removal, the cookie folder doesn't seem to show cookies that I knwo are there and show in safari. Seems like the cookie database (deleted per your recommendation so I could start the app) isn't rebuilding or something.

I wish I had just purchased directly from your website so I wouldn't have to wait for updates and could try your beta updates. Is there any way to transfer my purchase from the App store and just delete the app store install and install the version from your website?

Thanks (and congratulation on the new baby)

                        Mark

Sure, not a problem. Just send me an email at [email protected]
and ill make a license up for you to use with the version from my store.
                          🙂
